Lent is about leaning on God.
In the Bible, 40 is a significant number. 40 days tend to be a time of testing or trials for the people of Israel. Noah and the Flood (Genesis 7), Moses and Mt Sinai (Exodus 32), the Israelites and the Wilderness (Exodus 16), Jesus in temptation with the Devil (Matthew and Luke 4), and Jews and Disciples post Jesus’ ascension (Acts 1), etc. One thing is clear: God does A LOT in 40 days, especially when we lean on Him, which is why Lent is such an important season.
Lent challenges us to examine our lives.
What controls me? What cravings or “needs” do I have that seem necessary, but in reality, they are the just things that I depend on more than God? i.e. Scrolling on our phones, binging on Netflix, drinking too much coffee, driving too fast, reaching for the ice cream at 9pm, etc.
An Invitation to Give Up & Take Up
Phil’s Give & Take Challenge is about giving up or taking up something new each week for the 40 days of Lent to help us more fully lean on / depend on God.
Each week will focus on a different spiritual theme. They will be:
Rest/Time with God
Intentional Meals
Giving Away Your Possessions
Going into Nature
Being Bold in Your Faith
Becoming a Servant
Every Sunday throughout Lent we’ll send you a new set of Bible readings + a simple challenge to GIVE UP or TAKE UP. Many of us are used to giving something up for Lent, but taking something up can have the same effect on us, since it’s all about trying to depend on God.
Are you ready to lean on Jesus this Lent?!
