Space from Sundays

Written by: Bryan Willkom

We become what we repeatedly do and most Christians repeatedly attend a Sunday service.

So what then do we become? Stay with that question for awhile. It depends right?

One of the reasons Get Jesus Fit exists is because many of us didn’t like what Sundays did to us. We didn’t like who we were becoming (or who we became).

Was it all bad? No. Were there good things? Sure. Is there still good? Absolutely.

But was there enough weird, icky, shady, questionable, frustrating, “this feels off” things that led us to step back? Yep.

Space had to be created. The distance wasn’t shameful, it was brave and necessary.

Does this mean our spiritual lives are over? Nope. Does it mean our relationship with God has severed? Nope. Does it mean we’re done with community? Far from it. So, what does it mean?

It means we’re giving ourselves permission to practice differently.

It means we’re not waiting for approval from religious insiders. It means we’re letting questions lead the way instead of answers. It means we’re finding new ways to Be and Belong.

None of this is ‘less Jesus’ or ‘less church’ or ‘less faithful’…

It’s just us… doing our best… being ourselves… taking roads less traveled… seeking health & wholeness.

For some of us, that no longer looks like Sundays in sanctuaries. For others, it still does. Many of us are somewhere in-between.

Wherever you find yourself spiritually, remember: Soul care doesn’t have to look like a Sunday service.

No shame. No guilt. No judgement.

The real question is: Who do you want to become? Try to identify the spaces, practices and communities that can help you get there. (It might take some unlearning!) And then… go/do/be with them repeatedly.
